Negotiating the number of wages is not pleasant for anyone. But don’t forget that as much as you agree when starting a new job, you get as much and further negotiation of a wage increase is no easier. In today’s article, we’ll give you a few tips on how to improve a little more.
1. Start by researching the market first.
Find out the range of wages in the market in the field. How much companies actually pay to employees in your position. You can find this information both in the offer of job positions on the company’s company websites, on websites dealing with job advertisements or, for example, in salary surveys.
2. Never start talking about salary/wages ever first.
Ideally, don’t start negotiating a salary first and too soon at an interview. It almost always affects HR professionals that you are only interested in money and are the only thing that motivates you to work. They may also think that you will run away for a better job offer in the future precisely because of the higher valuation.
3. Prepare for the question “What is your idea of financial reward” thoroughly and in advance.
A different wage/salary can be requested by a high school graduate with an internship and another university student without an internship. A higher title does not automatically mean a higher rating. Your knowledge, skills and length of practice are also important. As a graduate without an internship, you will have to agree to a lower salary, but don’t forget to agree on a salary increase in the supplement to the employment contract. You can work for a minimum wage for a few months, but the idea that you will do a year or more for it and live the so-called “paycheck to paycheck” is not ideal and will not even motivate you to perform better. If you have already had some experience, do not be afraid to tell about the amount that is needed for your standard of living. After all, from the salary, you will pay all the necessary life costs and not only that.
So set your “real” minimum, from which you will have to come out every month. If the HR person disagrees with your minimum wage, then answer that you would be very reluctant if only money prevented further negotiations and show that you are willing to bargain. If the company is interested in you and you benefit from it, it will look for ways to pay you more money.
4. What if they offer little money?
If you are really interested in the position, but the salary is not according to your ideas, find out if the company offers a variable component of salary depending on performance. This will show that you are interested in the position and that you are willing to work more for it.
